Hanging Rock Cottage is a one-bedroom bed and breakfast cottage that is located on private property in the Shire of Macedon Ranges in Victoria, Australia.  The cottage is a stone’s throw from the Hanging Rock Recreation Reserve and the Hanging Rock Discovery Centre.  Hanging Rock, formally known as Mount Diogenes, can be viewed by guests in the private comfort of the cottage’s terrace.

The cottage and Hanging Rock is also surrounded by an immense diversity of flora and fauna.  Visitors may be fortunate enough to encounter over one hundred indigenous plant species, more than forty species of birds, as well as a variety of native wildlife such as kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, echidnas, possums, sugar gliders, and more.

Hanging Rock, or Mount Diogenes, is located in the Hanging Rock Recreation Reserve and is over 6 million years old.  Hanging Rock is a rare and intriguing volcanic rock formation, technically known as a mamelon.  It consists of a suspended boulder that is situated between other boulders with a main entrance and path beneath it.  Popular geological attractions of Hanging Rock include overhanging boulders, trails, caves, and tunnels.

Visitors can join tours and hike to the top of Hanging Rock and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding plains below.  At its highest point, Hanging Rock is 718 metres above sea level and takes, on average, 45 minutes to climb.

The Hanging Rock Recreation Reserve is open to the public during the day. The reserve offers many amenities for visitors to enjoy, including a forest and creek, walking paths and trails, a horseracing track, tennis courts, picnic grounds, barbeque facilities, playgrounds, a fully licensed café, and much more.  The Hanging Rock Discovery Centre offers visitors the opportunity to engage and explore the history and geology of Hanging Rock through interpretive displays and hands on activities.
